In this book, first, I explain the three essential molecules- carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and then emphasize protein structure. The apprehension of protein structure is very much necessary to understand the mechanism of action of the molecules of the immune system, especially the chemokines, cytokines, and the signal transduction pathways that are discussed in the later chapters.
Next, we move across to the organs and cells that give rise to the immune cells right from stem cells to the lymphatic system. We have a broad look into the components of the Innate and Adaptive Immune System. The role of skin, mucous membranes, GT tract, GI tract, respiratory tract, antimicrobial proteins, and cationic peptides are well explained.
Here I have put particular emphasis on the surfactants (collectins) SP-A, SP-D, and hydrophobic membrane proteins, SP-B, SP-C, and cathelicidins.
Then we move to the complement system with its three pathways. Before starting with the system, I have explained the precursor glycoproteins, opsonization, and antibody structure.
The lymphocytes and monocytes have been explained right from their origin. The immune response of the adaptive immune system is then discussed.
Finally, we move to Autoimmunity, Allergy, Hypersensitivity, Cancer, how microorganisms evade the immune response with special emphasis on antibiotic resistance and the inability of modern medicine to find quick remedies to some of the complex viruses.
Though there are a few good books on this topic, I have always felt the need for a more simplified, elaborate, systematic, and consistent approach on this topic. Nevertheless, to mention that a digital substitute over the sometimes unaffordable, highly-priced traditional print ones is much necessary.
